Dr. King Remembered At 7th Annual Tribute The Rev. Martin Luther King death should be remembered, not his birthday, says the Rev. Wyatt Tee Walker, a former associate of the slain civil rights leader. Walker spoke Sunday at the Adam's Mark Hotel in the seventh annual tribute to King.

He said the national holiday celebrating King's birthday, Jan. 15, ironically posed a "clear and present danger" and could derail the former leader's dream. Between 1,500 and 2,000 people attended the musical tribute to King, sponsored by the local chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity and Anheuser Busch Inc. "We made a strategic error," Walker told those in the audience. During the birthday celebration, he said, people get sentimental and misty-eyed remembering this "great, heroic figure." "The nation has become comfortable with Martin Luther King," he said.

"If you are comfortable with the memory of Martin Luther King you have missed his meaning." The circ*mstances of King's death from an assassin's bullet in Memphis, was more significant than when and where he was born, Walker said. Also, the reason for his struggle must be remembered, he said. King struggled against racism, pov- SAPPINGTON, ELMER Jan. 5, 1990, beloved husband of Genevieve A. All three remain obstacles for blacks today. Along with other cities, he said, "I would hazard to guess that is alive and kicking in St. Louis." Despite the nation's affluence, he said, homeless people sleep outside. Despite sentiments against war, U.S. soldiers invaded Walker said.

"We have to make a collective, personal commitment to work against racism, poverty and war," he said. Walker called King the only "authentic spiritual genius that Western religion has produced." He said the civil rights leader was able to bring together different groups, in the name of the Lord, unlike any other leader of his time. David A.
