The state of Illinois and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced in 2020 that the former hospital would be converted into a temporary overflow facility to ease the COVID-19 case strain on area hospitals. Despite work that went into converting the building for that use, it was never occupied.

At Advocate Sherman Hospital, the Level 2 Trauma Center is designed to get the patients efficient care with the highest level of expertise – while providing the comfort and quality the patients expect from an Advocate Health Care hospital.

As the health care needs and landscape of the community changed, Sherman decided to open a replacement facility on December 15, 2009 with 255 beds, located on Randall Rd and I-90 in Elgin. Everything about the new hospital was built with the patient in mind.

Breasts can be tender the week before and during menstruation, so try to schedule your mammogram for one to two weeks after your period starts. We ask women to not wear deodorant, powder, lotion or perfume on the day of their exam as they could show up on the mammogram.

For routine screening, we take two mammograms of each breast – one's a side view that goes underneath the armpit and allows us to see lymph nodes and some of the breast tissue that goes up into the armpit area.

If you think you should have breast screening, but you are not invited automatically, talk to your GP surgery, or call or email your local breast screening service to ask for an appointment.
