CHLD 360: Week 14: SEL in High School and College Settings Welcome to Week Fourteen This week we will be examining evidence based (research) SEL programs designed for high school students (adolescents) and a study of self-compassion with emerging adults. The article by Yeager (2017) reviews U.S. SEL classroom-based programs for high school students providing recommendations for effective approaches during the adolescent developmental period. The article by Drinkwater (2020) provides an example of an alternative education program for disengaged high school students (ages 13 to 17) in Australia. This is a short article that describes the implementation of Neurosequential Model in Education(NME) and the results with a sample of 40 students. Remember we were introduced to Dr. Perry and colleagues' Neurosequential Model in Educationin Week 13. Lastly, the article by Arimitsu and Hofmann (2017) describes the effectiveness of self- compassionate thinking on reducing negative emotions in a study of college undergraduates. This week's videos include: 1) A Google talk on Emotional Intelligence by Marc Brackett geared toward helping adults understand this area of development. You may remember Dr. Brackett from last week's materials, as the Director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence and co-developer of the RULER program. 2) The Learning2BREATHE evidence based SEL program for adolescents. 3) Dr. Kristin Neff: The Three Components of Self-Compassion, a talk given at the Greater Good Science Center, Oct 16, 2014. Dr. Neff is a leading researcher of self-compassion and founder of the Mindful Self-Compassion program explains the core features of self-compassion. This week you have a choice about your unit notes. Option 1)Create your own questions and answers for each of the subheadings listed below. Your questions and responses should be specific and clearly connected to course materials for that week; answers to the questions should be in-depth and show integration of content through connection of concepts within a reading or across different, but related class materials. There should be questions for each of the class materials in that week(i.e., readings and videos). Subheadings (as you see below) have been created for you to indicate which class materials you will be creating questions and answers about. Type of your Questions in blue. If you choose to create your own questions, 5 extra credit points will be addedwhen Unit Three Notes are graded. OR

CHLD 360: Week 14: SEL in High School and College Settings Option 2) respond to my questions in blue below. Some of you may prefer to answer my questions listed below and not spend the extra time and thought required to create your own questions. Either approach is fine with me. Article: Social and Emotional Learning Programs for Adolescents (Yeager, 2017). Meta-analyses of SEL Programs (pp. 79-80) Definition:A meta-analyses is a report or article that reviews multiple studies on the same topic and attempts to summarize main findings and to recommend areas of future research or school implementation. Yeager's summary of meta-analyses of 213 school based, universal SEL programs for grades Kindergarten through 12th, found that older adolescents altered their SE skills significantly less than younger children did. Typical SEL programs that focus primarily on teaching these skills and the rehearsal of these skills in classroom lessons appear to be largely ineffective for middle adolescents(ages 14 - 17), even though this approach seems to be effective for younger children. One clear implication of these findings is that designing developmentally appropriate SEL curriculumis essential. What Changes During Adolescence (p. 75) How does the onset of puberty influence adolescents in social learning situations? What have researchers more recently learned about the influence of testosterone on adolescents that IS NOT linked to aggression and sexual desire? Psychological Needs (p. 77) What are the 4 developmental tasks of adolescents identified by Bradford Brown? The Skill model What is the focus of the Skill model and what does research indicate about its' effectiveness with adolescents? The Climate model What is the focus of the Climate model and what does research indicate about its' effectiveness with adolescents? The Mindset model

CHLD 360: Week 14: SEL in High School and College Settings What is the focus of the Mindset model and what does research indicate about its' effectiveness with adolescents? Designing SEL Programs for Adolescents(pp. 81-82) Briefly describe/explain these key points in designing SEL programs for adolescents: 1)Keep it short. 2)A developmental windowregarding the development of the pre-frontal cortex abilities linked to SEL. 3)What is important in creating an effective learning climate for adolescents' SEL. 4)What types of opportunities should be provided? Hedonic Define Hedonic well-being. Eudemonic Define Eudemonic well-being. Building a Growth Mindset(p. 87) What is a growth mindset? Here's an example of how this might be practiced. Building Growth Mindset Through Mindfulness Instead Of Telling Yourself...Try Reminding Yourself... 1. I can't do this1. I can at least give it a try 2. I quit2. I should give myself another chance 3. I can't help it3. I should talk to the team leader about this 4. I don't deserve this4. Did I try my best? 5. Everyone can do this except me5. I can go and learn from them 6. I might make a mistake, so I won't attempt giving it a try6. If I make a mistake, I will try to use the lesson and not repeat it again Video: Learning2Breathe: Mindfulness in School Optional Activity #1: What do each of the letters of the Acronym BREATHE represent? For each letter provide the definition from this program and an example of exercises or guidance provided for each letter. Did students in the video feel this program was beneficial, in what ways?
